Opposition Leader Aubrey C. Norton visited Parishana, Region No. 9, traveling by road from Lethem. In his remarks to residents, Mr. Norton outlined APNU-AFC agenda to eradicate poverty and create wealth. He committed to empowering Indigenous communities through training and economic opportunities.
He declared that “The next APNU-AFC government will train Indigenous people in Indigenous communities to become contractors so they can fight in the wealth of this country,” Under the present PPP government most of the contractors’ executing contracts in the hinterland are from the coast.
The PNCR Leader emphasized the need for a shift towards self-reliance, stating, “You must begin to focus on becoming independent. I am not saying to you, do not accept a cash grant. It is your money, take it. But you must not be fooled that that will take you out of poverty. It would not. What is needed is programs to take you out of poverty.” He promised that the next APNU-AFC Government will develop programs to take and eradicate poverty.
Focusing on regional development, Norton stressed the importance of programs tailored to the specific needs of communities, including those in Region No. 9. “Essentially, we have to begin to look to ensure that there is a regional development program for not only Region 9, but every region,” he declared. With great emphasis he said, “You have significant potential. It is for us to realize the potential. But don’t be fooled, the PPP doesn’t want you independent.”
The PNCR Leader contrasted the track record of the APNU-AFC with that of the PPP, and invited residents to evaluate the impact of each party’s governance. He said, “I invite you to compare the five years, 2015 to 2020 under us, and 2020 to present under the PPP. He emphasized the tangible progress achieved during the APNU-AFC’s term in office.
