The House to House Registration in 2008 was bitter medicine for the PPP: it knocked them off their altar of electoral invincibility. Consequently, they loss both elections held thereafter. In 2011 PPP received 48.6% of the votes, and in 2015, 49.2% – a significant drop from the 54.67% they received in 2006. The size of…
I am intrigued by the CCJ’s veiled threat to issue coercive orders (the “consequential orders”) against the Government/Attorney General, given the clear prohibitions against such orders in our State Liability and Proceedings, Act, Cap 6:05 Laws of Guyana.
President David Granger is correct in insisting that there should be new registration.
Periodic Enumerations
To implement a more inclusive voter registration process, some states conduct door-to-door enumerations, with election officials contacting each household in person.
Where did these 103,000 persons come from? Are they fictitious people, are they as a result of multiple registration, are some of them dead who are still on the list? We have already established, using Bureau of Statistic age specific death rate, that approximately 45,000 persons from the pool died since 2012. It is reported that GECOM removed an average of 2,300 names of dead persons from the list each year. This means that since 2012, approximately 16,000 names were removed from the list. Hence, the names of approximately 29,000 dead persons are still be coming on the list.
Reports are that the PPP has an ongoing operation among it’s support base to collect the ID cards of the migrating relatives of supporters. At the moment, the PPP has tens of thousands ID cards.
The fact of the matter is, the PPP failed to garner a majority in the last two elections. This argument about the PPP invincibility at the poll is just a myth. However, hard work is ahead to achieve the result that will ensure the nation’s wealth is not exposed to PPP plunder. We all must remain focused. Think of our children and grandchildren, born and unborn, as we make decisions about these elections. Will we allow children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the PPP executives and their friends to jet set around the world as super rich heirs and heiresses, while our descendants live in squalor in the villages in Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo?
Moreover why didn’t Jagdeo tell the nation that his party’s executive member Dr. Frank Anthony and his daughter are under investigation for allegedly robbing the nation of millions dollars in an alleged $30 million scholarship fraud scheme?
On the basis of oil revenue alone, our GDP should increase at least 300 per cent, from US$3.6B to US$13B by the mid-2020s. Some experts even estimate GDP could increase a whopping 1000 per cent by 2030, or move to US$30+B. Let’s put this in perspective. Guyana’s current GDP is smaller than the GDP of Trinidad, Jamaica, Bahamas, and Barbados. However, it is larger than the GDP of Belize, St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada and St. Kitts. However, when GDP reaches US$13B, Guyana’s economy will be larger than all of the aforementioned except Trinidad and Jamaica. By 2030, when GDP reaches US$30B, Guyana’s economy will be larger than all of the aforementioned.
In addition, things are likely to get worse for the PPP as the investigation into the oil blocks giveaway pick up stream and reveal the extent of PPP corrupt actions. The fact that the oil block scam seems to be from the same playbook as the Berbice Bridge Scam, and the Skeldon Sugar Factory Scam, is likely to make voters weary about putting the PPP in charge of our oil wealth.
